Syrian hackers deface Al Jazeera website

Pro-government ‘electronic army’ hacks into Al Jazeera’s live Syria coverage…

The Syrian Electronic Army has posted pro-Assad images onto Al Jazeera’s live blog, which follows events in Syria and is considered by regime supporters to be actively sympathetic to the Syrian opposition.

  • On its own site the hacker group reported that the work was carried out by a “professional Syrian battalion”, and denounced Al Jazeera for attempting to “ignite sedition” in Syria
  • The relationship between the regime and the Syrian Electronic Army is unclear, though it’s hosted on servers run by the Syrian Computer Society, once headed by Bashar al-Assad
  • The attack on Al Jazeera is the second this month, and follows notable activity by the group such as its takeover of Harvard University’s website
